Black History Month kicks off this Saturday, Feb. 1, providing an opportunity to celebrate the contributions and learn about the history of Black Canadians.

“Black History Month is an opportunity for us all to learn about and celebrate the many and diverse contributions of Black people to our province,” stated B.C. Premier David Eby on Saturday. If you’re in Victoria, there are several events taking place over the next month to celebrate and learn more about black history. Here are few to check out.is hosting a BHM launch event to kick off the month. The launch party takes place at KWENCH, located at 2031 Store Street in Victoria. The suggested donation is $10 and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
“The upbeat harmonies of Locrian Tones will keep us dancing throughout the evening, and food by House of Boateng is included,” states the event page. Drinks are available for purchase.On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Royal BC Museum will be hosting an event between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the BC Black History Awareness Society and the University of Victoria.“UVic Students of Colour Collective and African Caribbean Students Association will model African prints from four local designers.
