The roller coaster of emotions this goalie parent has been through, however, has been worth it
As I walked into the arena that Sunday afternoon, I was an emotional train wreck. My son was the goalie in Game 1 of his hockey team’s league championship final. As a goalie parent that meant tension and anxiety fuelled by the knowledge that at the end of the next two hours my child will either be anointed as a hero or a box-score footnote in the annals of another hockey season.
I am a fidgety guy that goes through every emotion a human being can muster in a 60-minute game. I get angry, mad, happy, sad, joyful and thrilled. My emotional well-being is wrapped up in a slender teen whose role is simple; to fling his body in front of a six-ounce rubber disc every time it is directed his way.
Our team scores and we are ahead by a goal. Hallelujah! The Tigers are well on their way, but later a puck is deflected and goes in behind Tyson and another trickles just past the goal line. Our team is now behind. More anxiety for the goalie parent ensues. When the Tigers are ahead by two goals, I let out a massive sigh of relief. As the final buzzer goes off, the Tigers have won. The goalie’s parents have also done their part by cheering him on and living and dying with every shot that is put his way.
