The NDP 's food price inflation critic is “cautiously optimistic” about the long-awaited grocery code of conduct, but argues that voluntary participation has left its effectiveness open to question. “I think it's good that we arrived at this point … but I think, as with many initiatives, time will tell to see how effective it actually is going to be,” said NDP MP Alistair MacGregor “It's about time.
He said the rate of food price inflation may not be as high as it once was, but most Canadians are still not seeing any relief when it comes to buying groceries. “I have also heard a lot about ‘shrinkflation,’ where people have noticed that the net weight or net volume of a product that they have traditionally bought has suddenly shrunk in size, but the price has stayed the same,” he said.
