After 20 years of putting on special events, the Victoria Event Centre is closing its doors at the end of the month.
The centre posted on social media Thursday its lease has been terminated and its last day of operation will be Oct. 27.
“It has been an honour hosting such a range of events and communities in our space over the years,” the post reads. “Like many arts venues in Victoria we have been struggling post pandemic, and although we’ve had positives signs of getting fully back on track, thanks in large part to support from the City of Victoria and other partners, we just could not weather a substantial rent increase as the owners were no longer able to partially subsidize the space.”The centre says new operators will be taking over on Nov. 1.
“We are not alone in this,” the centre said. “Community-driven arts and culture spaces are being shut down or priced out in cities across the country. We will be taking some time to review our next steps.” The centre is thanking the artists who have performed on the stage, the staff, volunteer board and community members who have made the space a safe and accepting place for all to gather and perform.“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate this next phase,” the post reads.
