Vaughn Palmer: Kahlon bows out, hands premier's job to Eby
Kahlon, the jobs minister, is one of the most energetic and likable ministers in the government, with a growing base of support in Metro Vancouver and South Asian communities.“After careful consideration with my family, we have come to the decision that now is not the time for us,” he announced on social media.“Being a dad is something I cherish,” he told Rob Shaw of CHEK news. “It’s the most important job I have.
So when an ambitious and able politician like Kahlon says he is not ready to take a run at the top job, believe him — he’s thought it through. “He’s compassionate, he’s thoughtful, and he’s delivered big things for this province already,” Kahlon told Global News.PNG Giant-killer Eby was already popular with the party’s activist base and a nascent leadership campaign was in the works.Instead, Eby called up John Horgan, according to the account in the book Matter of Confidence by reporters Shaw and Richard Zussman.Horgan had been planning to sit out the race. Encouraged by others, he did enter and was chosen leader by acclamation.
Port Coquitlam mayor Brad West was touted in some circles as a promising outsider with flashes of John Horgan’s populist style. West quietly passed the word that he’s not ready to jump into the provincial arena.
