“Oh, how the goalposts do move. To suggest that LNG Canada should be exempted from future increases in the carbon tax because it is the cleanest in the world … it’s not. It’s nowhere close.”…
VICTORIA — As the enabling legislation for the LNG Canada deal was approved this week, Finance Minister Carole James acknowledged New Democrats were answerable for how the terms matched principles they laid out in the last election.
• One: “Projects must offer jobs and training for British Columbians, especially jobs for local people.” Horgan and crew called the Pacific Northwest deal a “sellout.” But on taking office they negotiated more generous terms with LNG Canada. By comparison, the B.C. Liberals claimed their more demanding tax regime would deliver $800 million a year to the provincial treasury.
The carbon tax rate is $40 effective this week and will reach $50 in 2021, three years before the project is expected to start shipping LNG. Still, as James herself acknowledged in closing debate, “I recognize the work that the company has still ongoing with the hereditary chiefs.”
