VICTORIA — It was a sombre group of MLAs who filed into the legislature chamber Monday afternoon, having just learned of the passing of the conflict of interest commissioner, Paul Fraser.

“There is a term in our world that has fallen into disuse,” said Opposition Leader Andrew Wilkinson. “It is a gentleman. Paul Fraser throughout his career and in his time here was a gentleman.” He also accepted the verdict when Fraser ruled that party fundraising, being legal, was a matter best left to the voters.

Enter Fraser, who concluded, after a proper investigation, that Redford was not guilty of violating Alberta’s conflict legislation. In the event of a vacancy, the enabling legislation for the office provides for cabinet to fill the post on an interim basis pending a search for a permanent successor.
