The B.C. premier thus echoed federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan’s preference for a negotiated settlement in this port dispute. The B.C. government has stuck to its preference for letting negotiations play out, even when it hurts — most notably in the labour dispute in transit services in the Fraser Valley.
Eby’s non-interventionist preference in the port dispute also put him at odds with B.C. United Opposition. It demanded the premier “call on the federal government to step in and bring an end to the dispute” in the first week of the strike. “I am personally concerned about how this impasse is hurting workers, everyday people, and small businesses. Things are already hard enough for people in B.C. with rising grocery prices, a punishing carbon tax, and brutal housing costs.
