Two Vancouver Island communities have been recognized as top destinations for new residents, according to a report by U-Haul. The report, based on one-way U-Haul truck and container traffic in 2024, highlights the shift in migration patterns across Canada.

While Alberta was the top province for movers, two Vancouver Island cities were among the top 25 cities for growth, meaning they saw more people coming in than moving out using one-way U-Haul vehicles.The number one city in terms of growth was Calgary, AB, followed by Edmonton, AB, in second place and Belleville, ON, in third place.
“The cost of living is not as bad as compared to some other provinces. You have the Canadian Rockies and lots of recreational activities. It’s all of these factors,” he said in a release Friday. In total, U-Haul says Alberta saw 51.2 per cent of its one-way U-Haul traffic moving to Alberta, while 48.8 per cent of these one-way trips were leaving the province.
