The Canada Games host society is paying $1,500 to UPEI students living in Andrew Hall residence if they move out during the upcoming national sporting event.

The additional rooms were necessary when more athletes than expected were confirmed for the Games, which run Feb. 18 to March 5. “If you ask athletes 10 years down the road what was the thing they loved the most about the Canada Games, they’ll talk about where they slept and where they ate and the socializing around the athletes’ village.

The 44 students who volunteered their rooms were enough to house the 120 extra athletes in the village, said Carew. “I thought we were just going to leave our stuff in there, but we weren’t. So, after I heard that, I was a bit iffy about it, just because if it got mixed up with other people’s or something.”
