SYDNEY, N.S. — Prithpal Singh waited 45 minutes at a George Street, downtown Sydney bus stop Tuesday morning — first for a bus that was never going to come and then for a cab that was backed up due to high volumes of calls.

CBRM communications issued a statement in the morning saying the current collective agreement between CUPE 759 and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality has a grievance process. CUPE said in June, without the union being notified, CBRM posted two tenders for garbage collection, endangering 50 jobs if a private company was successful in winning the contract.“Our members are frustrated,” Ivey said. “We keep having meetings about the CBRM not following the collective agreement, and we had another one yesterday, but nothing changes.”

They said the CUPE 759 executive has been notified that those who were part of the walkout may face disciplinary action pending further investigation. The cost of taking cabs was a concern for people like Singh, who had an exam Tuesday morning and emailed his professor about the delay. “We’re pretty slammed this morning,” Hawco-Landry, adding the lack of buses initially caught everyone off guard.

Though the mayor said she didn't know all the details of it, but noted there were members of the union unhappy with an accommodation that was made.
