SYDNEY, N.S. — It took a personal moment during February’s major snowstorm wallop to cement in Mayor Amanda McDougall-Merrill’s mind a major decision she needed to make.
“The other thing is you’re either feeling guilty because you’re spending so much time focused on work and not at home. But then again with my son Emmett, especially, we travel a lot for his health care at the IWK because that’s where his specialists are located, when I have to go and focus on Emmett, I would have that nagging feeling of, ‘OK, you’re negating your duties in the office.’
Hence the reason McDougall-Merrill is citing family as the main consideration for not opting for a second term helming the province’s second-largest municipality. “Do I want to be a politician in a world of politics that’s becoming so polarized and so angry?” she said, citing occasions such as the Sydney Santa Claus Parade route fallout wherein she and her family were threatened, as well as online attacks toward her Down Syndrome son.
CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall-Merrill:"Is there is a plan to develop things with the new owner? Could this be based on different economic opportunities?” CONTRIBUTED - CONTRIBUTEDWhile her term as mayor proved to be one of growth and development for the municipality, it also was one of dealing with major challenges beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
