“Safe, sustainable, and affordable housing is a basic human need and a requirement for good mental health. When housing is inadequate or unavailable, personal as well as community well-being suffers.”

Based on the regional housing assessment completed by the province of Nova Scotia last year, we know that the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is currently short 1,000 housing units to support our growing population. That number has the potential to double in the next 10 years. We can also recognize that the path to permanent housing looks different for each individual. For some, the transition from living rough takes time and requires support. Often it means taking small steps that are dictated by the specific needs of that individual, but if we meet people where they are the long-term possibility of permanent housing is within reach.

I have to be honest, however, and express my worry that we may not get there because fear could lead to further division – division we are beginning to witness within the community around supportive and temporary housing.
