The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) has warned homeowners about the dangers of hiring unlicensed electricians. After a contractor sent an unlicensed person to a home in Whitby, the ESA issued Johnson Kalistan two Administrative Penalty Orders totaling $6,000.
The message from the Electrical Safety Authority comes after one contractor sent an unlicensed person to a Whitby home.
Emily Larose, Vice-President, Regulatory and General Counsel at the ESA says there are some red flags you can look for when you’re asking for help. “If you have a contractor who can do everything, kind of a Jack-of-all trades or a Jill-of-all trades, that can be a red flag that they may in fact be master of none and may not have the necessary licences,” Larose said.“Whenever you’re hiring someone to do electrical you should ask for their licence electrical contract number, that’s an ESA number you can check that against the
As for the case in Whitby, according to the ESA, a man named Johnson Kalistan was issued two Administrative Penalty Orders totaling $6,000.He didn’t take the ads down and that’s when he was handed the fines.The ESA says any unlicensed electrical work in your home is illegal and has caused four times more safety issues than work completed by an LEC.
