“We’re seeing these tactics being used, specifically across the service industry, by a number of different employers, be they corporate, massive companies and also local businesses,” she said. “These are well-known tactics that are very easy to use, and really don’t have a lot of consequences for the employer to utilize, and so what we’re seeing in the Java Blend case is that it’s very easy for employers in this province to delay the counting of the ballots in a union vote.
“The reason why the workers have decided to, essentially, escalate their campaign by organizing a boycott on Sunday is for one, the workers specifically did not call for a boycott when they were fired in January. But since then, what we’ve seen is the public naturally and organically have boycotted because they don’t want to support a business that is engaging in these sorts of actions,” said Oh, adding that limited mediation talks have been held.
