has announced it will be officially changing the name of its "Fair & Lovely" skin-lightening line, sold in India., Unilever announced the decision early today, June 25, following widespread complaints. Over the last few weeks, many users have taken to the Internet to point out that the brand's "Fair & Lovely" promoted colorism within the Asian market.

“This product has built upon, perpetuated and benefited from internalized racism and promotes anti-blackness sentiments amongst all its consumers,” states athat asks for the “Fair &Lovely” line to be discontinued. “Colorism, discrimination based on the color of your skin, is a direct by-product of racism affecting millions of people today, that fairness creams such as Fair & Lovely continue to advance.

The petition, written and started by written by Anum Chandani, Hira Hashmi and Marvi Ahmed, has garnered over 13,000 signs since its creation. Unilever seems to have caught wind of the concerns, however, the name adaptation is the only change the line will see. Unilever is not removing the products from shelves as many hoped and asked for.

On top of changing the line's name, the company also announced it would remove the words "white/whitening," "light/lightening" and "fair/fairness" from all advertisements and products going forward.
