UCSD, which tied for fourth place in its Division I debut, picked for ninth place again in challenging Big West
UC San Diego opens the 2022 baseball season this weekend with a four-game home series against Seattle that includes a new feature just beyond the outfield wall at Triton Ballpark.
The 2022 preseason coaches poll again tabbed the Tritons for ninth with 33 points. That places them ahead of only UC Riverside and UC Davis in the 11-team conference. Rounding out the fourth through eighth spots in the poll were Cal Poly , Cal State Fullerton , Hawaii , Cal State Northridge and Cal State Bakersfield .The Tritons return two of their starters in graduate senior right-hander Noah Conlon and junior right-hander Aren Alvarez .
Junior left-hander Izaak Martinez and sophomore right-hander Joey Soberon figure at the back end of games.UCSD lost six of its top eight run producers, but the Tritons’ top two hitters return in senior shortstop Michael Fuhrman and graduate senior outfielder Anthony Lucchetti . Outfielder/left-hander Austin Smith, a freshman from Granite Hills High who batted .459 last season, is expected to make an immediate impact in the lineup and pitching in a relief role.UCSD will build on a budding rivalry with the county’s other two Division I programs with weekday games against USD and San Diego State .
