A new, publicly funded residential detox facility in Toronto, Withdrawal Management Services, is providing much-needed support for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. The facility offers a range of services, including group and individual therapy, 24-hour nursing and counselling support, and comfortable communal spaces. The opening comes amidst a severe shortage of detox beds across the province, highlighted by the facility's rapid occupancy rate.

There are private and shared rooms, a kitchen with cooked meals, laundry rooms and several lounges to play cards or watch television.
“When you come to the door here, you’re given a sense of dignity and hope after losing so much of yourself to get there and I think that’s really important,” said Orson, who is now a peer support worker at the site. But spots open up frequently as the program is designed for short-term residential stays, he said, and day programs are also available.The demand is further proof of a severe shortage of detox beds across the province, Dhalla said.spread slowly eastward from British Columbia. The province will instead launch 19 new “homelessness and addiction recovery treatment” – or HART – hubs, plus 375 highly supportive housing units at a planned cost of $378 million.Through gangs and organized crime, opioids have found their way into virtually every nook and cranny in Ontario, from big cities such as Toronto and Ottawa to remote, fly-in First Nations in the north and everything in between.
“There’s something about our physical spaces that convey care and love. It’s hard to feel cared for and loved when you are in a physical environment that is decrepit,” Dhalla said.
