As both the Wave and the Padres head into their summer break, the Padres, gentlemen that they are, are opening the door for the Wave to bring home San Diego’s first major sports trophy.
Kornieck deemed it “very unlucky” the Wave trailed 1-0 at halftime, a deficit Cheyenne Shorts erased 50 seconds into the second half, only for a crossing pass to bounce off her and into the goal, restoring Washington’s lead in the 54th minute. They showed signs Saturday of learning how to win without Alex Morgan, their star striker without whom they’ve gone 0-2-2 in the regular season and 0-4-2 overall.
A mainstay on last year’s club, which reached the NWSL semifinals, Kornieck turned in her best showing of the season. She appeared full recovered from an abdomen injury that sidelined her four games.
