San Diego will try to pull out of a slump Saturday night in a home match against the Washington Spirit
Three thoughts on the San Diego Wave, who’ll face the Washington Spirit in a 7:07 p.m match Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium\:A Wave victory would shore up a playoff bid and halt three winless streaks outside of Challenge Cup matches.
The Wave began this weekend in the sixth and final playoff spot of the 12-team National Women’s Soccer League. To land a playoff match at home, they’d have to finish fourth or higher. It didn’t go well for either club. The Wave fell 1-0 at last-place Chicago while lacking five national team players, plus injured regulars Kristen McNabb and Sierra Enge. Down six Cup-bound players, the Spirit fell 3-0 at home against Orlando.“It boils down to a little bit of who wants it the most,” Stoney said. “They’ve got new partnerships in their team, we’ve got new partnerships in our team. They’re coming off a loss, we’re coming off a loss.
Contending that his team’s hard work wasn’t rewarded in last week’s match, Spirit coach Mark Parsons struck a confident tone afteward. “I love the challenge of this period, and you’ll see a big reaction next week,” he said, according to the Washington Post.
