British Columbia joined Confederation on this date in 1871, becoming Canada’s sixth province. John Foster McCreight was the new province’s first Premier.
The promise by Sir John A. Macdonald’s government to link the Pacific colony to the Dominion through a railway was key to securing BC’s agreeing to join the Dominion of Canada with provincial status. The CPR was completed in 1885 and BC and Canada were now bound by a band of steel that stretched all the way from Atlantic to Pacific.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
