Thunder Bay City Hall is implementing mandatory bag checks for attendees at council meetings, starting Monday, to enhance safety measures. The policy aims to prevent potential threats and create a secure environment for everyone.

Thunder Bay City Hall will implement mandatory bag checks for attendees at council meetings starting this Monday. Krista Power, Director of Legislative Services & City Clerk, explained to Newswatch that the measure aims to enhance safety for everyone involved, including council members, city staff, and the general public. Power emphasized that this proactive step is being taken in response to evolving security concerns across Canada.

She noted the increasing prevalence of bag checks at public events like concerts and sporting matches, as well as the requirement for clear bags at major US venues and events. \Starting Monday, attendees can expect to encounter a security guard who will visually inspect their bags, including purses, backpacks, and briefcases, upon entry. Power clarified that the purpose of the check is to identify potentially harmful items and ensure the safety of all individuals within the building. The city will not be confiscating personal belongings, but rather focusing on preventing any threats. \Signage will be posted throughout City Hall to clearly communicate the new policy and procedure to the public. Power also mentioned that those who prefer not to have their bags checked can still participate in council meetings remotely by accessing them through the city's website, Rogers TV, or Tbaytel channels
