Here are three things you need to know about the Blue Jays’ 6-5 loss to the Orioles at Rogers Centre on Tuesday⚾️
’ 6-5 loss to the Orioles at Rogers Centre on Tuesday:Gabriel Moreno made his first start at Rogers Centre and liked the look of the place. The 22-year-old had his first multi-hit game in the big leagues with three singles in four trips, and his first two major-league RBIs. Moreno also threw out Jorge Mateo, the third-fastest runner in the majors, trying to steal second base in the second inning. Mateo got him twice in the sixth, though.
The only thing Moreno couldn’t do was shepherd Yusei Kikuchi through a solid outing. The left-hander gave up four runs on five hits and four walks, leaving after coughing up a leadoff home run to Austin Hays in the fifth.Matt Chapman returned from a three-game absence due to a sore wrist and made an immediate impact. He singled in his first at-bat and scored the Jays’ first run, then belted a two-run homer in the fourth to tie the game 3-3.
The third baseman hit a 107.2-m.p.h. shot to the wrong part of the park in the eighth. Cedric Mullins caught the ball at the wall in dead centre.Trevor Richards was first out of the Jays bullpen after Hays’ home run broke the 3-3 tie and he immediately gave up a double to Ryan Mountcastle, who scored on a sac fly. Richards walked Mateo to lead off the sixth and was done for the night after allowing an RBI single to Mullins.
The silver-maned righty was a huge piece of the Jays’ ‘pen last season, allowing just 26 base runners in 32 1/3 innings with 37 strikeouts, but he hasn’t been able to repeat that success. His ERA is up to 5.86, his WHIP is 1.518.
