Logan Thompson made 32 saves to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. The Capitals are now tied for first place in the NHL standings with the Winnipeg Jets.
Logan Thompson continued his impressive run in goal, stopping 32 shots and leading the Washington Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Pierre-Luc Dubois , Dylan Strome with the game-winner, and Aliaksei Protas scored for Washington (34-11-5), who are tied for first place in the NHL standings with the Winnipeg Jets.
Blake Coleman scored the lone goal for Calgary (24-18-7), who remain one point ahead of the Vancouver Canucks for the second wild-card berth in the Western Conference. Thompson was especially dominant early, despite the Flames outshooting the Capitals 13-5 in the first period. He made several crucial saves, including a pad stop on Ryan Lomberg's breakaway and a stick save on Nazem Kadri's partial breakaway. Thompson's strong performance extended his winning streak to six games and improved his record to 11-0-1 in his last 12 starts. He is now 23-2-3 on the season. Dustin Wolf made 20 saves for Calgary, falling to 18-8-2. Former Flame Andrew Mangiapane received a warm welcome from the Calgary crowd upon his return to the city, but he was held scoreless and has now gone seven games without a point. The Flames welcomed back Tyson Barrie, who returned to the lineup after missing 31 games with an injury. Barrie set up Coleman's goal and came close to scoring himself with a point shot that hit the crossbar. The Flames were missing defenseman Kevin Bahl for the second consecutive game due to a concussion. A key turning point in the game came shortly after Coleman tied the game 1-1 on the power play. With the Flames already shorthanded, Coleman was penalized for closing his hand on the puck, giving the Capitals a 5-on-3 advantage. Washington capitalized on the opportunity just 18 seconds later, with Strome lifting a backhand shot into the top corner from the side of the crease. This was just the third time Wolf has lost at the Scotiabank Saddledome this season. He entered the game with a 12-2-1 record and a .936 save percentage on home ice.
