Logan Thompson's outstanding performance in goal, along with goals from Pierre-Luc Dubois, Dylan Strome, and Aliaksei Protas, propelled the Washington Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.
Logan Thompson continued his stellar performance in net, stopping 32 shots to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Pierre-Luc Dubois , Dylan Strome with the game-winning goal, and Aliaksei Protas scored for Washington (34-11-5), who are tied for first place in the NHL standings with the Winnipeg Jets (though they hold two games in hand).
Blake Coleman scored the lone goal for Calgary (24-18-7), who remain one point ahead of the Vancouver Canucks for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Thompson was particularly impressive in the first period, despite the Flames outshooting the Capitals 13-5. He made several key saves, including a pad stop on Ryan Lomberg's breakaway attempt and a stick save on Nazem Kadri's partial breakaway. His strong performance earned him his sixth consecutive win and improved his record to 11-0-1 in his last 12 starts. He now boasts a 23-2-3 record on the season. Dustin Wolf made 20 saves for Calgary, but fell to 18-8-2. In a game filled with individual storylines, Andrew Mangiapane received a warm welcome from the Calgary crowd in his first game back in the city since leaving the Flames as a free agent last summer. A video tribute recognized his nine years with the organization, but Mangiapane was held scoreless and has now gone seven games without a point. For the Flames, Tyson Barrie made a significant impact in his return to the lineup after a 31-game absence due to injury. He set up Coleman's goal with a shot from the blue line and later rang a shot off the crossbar. Calgary was without top-pairing defenseman Kevin Bahl for the second consecutive game as he recovers from a concussion sustained last Saturday against the Minnesota Wild. A pivotal moment in the game came shortly after Coleman tied the game 1-1 on the power play. Coleman then put his team down two men when, just nine seconds into a penalty kill, he grabbed a rebound and threw the puck down the ice, drawing a penalty for closing his hand on the puck. The Capitals capitalized on the 5-on-3 advantage just 18 seconds later when Strome lifted a backhand into the top corner from the side of the crease. This was only the third time Wolf has lost at the Scotiabank Saddledome this season. He entered the game with a 12-2-1 record and a .936 save percentage at home. The Capitals will continue their road trip with a game against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, while the Flames return home to host the Anaheim Ducks
