The military report ‘has blown the lid off something that has been going on for a long time’
A day after a military report shed light on shocking conditions inside five Ontario long-term care homes, the province says it will conduct “comprehensive, detailed inspections” at every high-risk home in the province over the next 21 days.
Several Ottawa long-term care homes have been among the worst hit by COVID-19 in the province, but according to a risk assessment from two years ago there were no high-risk homes in the city. Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, minister of long-term care, dismissed questions about why the province’s inspection system did not catch many of the problems with infection control, cleanliness, staffing and training before the military went in to the five long-term care homes. She noted that there were close to 3,000 complaints-based inspections in long-term care homes last year. Advocates say that complaints-based inspections seldom focus on infection control because it is difficult to see.
The report revealed poor hygiene, neglect, allegations of abuse and numerous practices that likely led to the spread of COVID-19 among vulnerable seniors. Ford released the report publicly Wednesday, vowing to fix the long-term care system.
