A 79-year-old woman died of exposure after being locked out of an assisted living facility in Oshawa, Ontario overnight. Three employees and the facility itself have been charged with criminal negligence causing death.

On April 1, 2023, police in Oshawa, Ontario, responded to a call at Aspira Traditions of Durham Retirement, located at 1255 Bloor Street East. The call involved the discovery of a deceased 79-year-old woman on a bench outside the retirement home. A subsequent investigation revealed that the woman had wandered out of the facility around 7:30 p.m. on March 31, 2023. She exited through a stairwell and was unable to re-enter due to the locked doors.

Tragically, she spent the night exposed to the elements and was found lifeless the following morning. An autopsy confirmed that exposure to the elements was the cause of death. The investigation led to charges against three employees of Aspira Traditions of Durham Retirement, as well as the facility itself. In February 2023, Jessica White, a 32-year-old employee, was charged with criminal negligence causing death. In December 2022, Padmini Kisseur, 34, of Oshawa, and Danika Harrison, 29, of Newcastle, both working at the facility at the time of the incident, were charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life for a person under their charge. Additionally, Aspira Traditions of Durham Retirement Living itself faces a charge of criminal negligence causing death.Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Constable Peden of the DRPS’s East Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 1659, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
