SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 24, 2023 | SaltWireWhen the last of the 57,100 frozen folks had made their shivering exit from Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003, well-fortified, with all manner of drink to stay more warm than hydrated, bathrooms overflowing, then Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe was asked about a sequel to the first Heritage Classic. The end of the day added up to 7,281 of them.

“I mean, our building manager Craig Tkachuk didn’t sleep for a week. David Reid had all this pressure on him as the lead of our medical team. The game went off with Paulina Gretzky singing, the Snowbirds flying over Commonwealth in ear-splitting formation, goalie Jose Theodore with his toque over his helmet, local referee Dan Marouelli taping his whistle so his lips wouldn’t stick to the metal like when you were a kid and licked a metal door handle and regretted it.

“I remember we had just had Isabella. She was three months old and was wrapped up in this big parka. After the second period, we had to get the babysitter or somebody else to take her home, she was too cold,” Smyth said. The 2023 game on Saturday night will be played on an NHL ice-plant trucked in for the game, just as it is for all the other outdoor games these days. The ice will be just fine, barring snow. As of today, there are tickets for sale for Sunday’s game.

“I still remember Theodore with that toque . First time I saw it I thought ‘omygosh, are you kidding me?’ I thought he was just doing it for warm-up. But the more I saw it, I thought this was pretty neat,” Smyth said. “One thing a lot of people forget is this:. We had three Zambonis resurfacing rather than the normal two and that was the only way we could tackle it when we saw the ice,” said Craig, the NHL’s Icemaker who started at Rexall Place.
