CORNER BROOK, N.L. — About three weeks ago Corner Brook resident Rick Kean was working a night shift when he and a co-worker began talking about a young moose that had been hanging around the city.Kean described the animal as roughly a year old. He said it was calm and approachable.“He was a nice young animal,” said Kean. “I got out to take a video of him while he was in someone’s front yard, and I walked right up to him. He had not a care in the world. I could almost pat it on top of his head.

Though Kean didn’t witness the incident, he said his information comes from a reliable source. Kean said the children apparently surrounded the moose and began throwing sticks and rocks at it. “Someone had to have seen the moose getting aggressive with the kids because the wildlife officers came down not too long after.”Kean said wildlife officials attempted to scare off the moose. They used rubber bullets and hit the moose four times, but it didn't work.

Kean is all for killing for the consumption of an animal but when it comes to this situation, he said it wasn't necessary. On May 10, 2024 the province’s Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture issued a statement about the euthanization of a moose in Corner Brook on May 9. “Officers always consider a multiple of factors including public safety, the likelihood that the animal will continue to pose a risk, and options to deal with the animal safely,” the statement read.
