When he was good, Scherzer was great, but the three-time Cy Young winner hasn’t been good in a while
Former New York Mets' Max Scherzer pitches during the first inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 29, 2023, in New York. On Thursday, according to multiple reports, the Jays signed Scherzer to a one-year, US$15.5-million deal.At the beginning of a classic action ensemble, the guy in charge of the mission learns he will have to draw his team from among the castoffs and ne’er-do-wells.
Thursday’s signing stands in contrast to the ambition with which the Jays began their off-season shopping. For months, they threw themselves at the top pitching talent in the free-agent class – Max Fried, Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki.along until the very end, increasing their own price in the process. Then they ditched the Jays for better teams. That this happened in succession, one after the other, suggests that everyone in baseball has Toronto pegged as total suckers.
That said, Santander is at least performing right now. Scherzer hasn’t performed in ages. Though the market for starting pitching is going through the roof, his new deal in Toronto represents a 60-per-cent pay cut. If no deal is done by then, Guerrero will enter free agency at year’s end. Then he, too, can discover the financial magic of letting the Jays add zeroes and years to his deal. All they have to do is tell everyone how much they like him, and how certain they are that he will pick them. And – voila! – Guerrero signs with the Boston Red Sox.
