Houston native and singer-songwriter wraps up months of farewell shows before he quits touring
That Keen’s second album, released in 1988, was a live recording is telling. By that point, he had built a significant following for his songs. Keen’s appeal likely wouldn’t have made an impression in a conference room meeting in the 1980s. You had to feel the vibe at his shows to get it. Keen doesn’t possess a dynamic vocal range. Some of his best songs slip past in four minutes without the attitudinal trimmings that can get a songwriter noticed.

“They always compliment your shirt or your shoes,” he says. “I don’t know where they learned to do that. All of the thoughts Keen shares course through the mind when he plays Irving Plaza. The show, like all Keen shows, is just right. He expertly frontloads the set with tunes he’s especially proud of. But he knows exactly where to place the crowd-pleasers. Shows are often funnels, and his is no exception: the closer to the end, the more compact it is.
