OTTAWA—The current global political landscape is under siege. Parliamentarians, and the institutions that support their activities, are losing the electorate's trust and support. But here in Canada, the United Kingdom, and—now most recently—in the United States, there are glimmers of hope. By the end of this year, over half of the world’s population will have participated in elections.
Anyone who has spent more than two minutes as a politician knows that truly complex issues exist in a grey area, not one that is seen through a black or white lens. Making decisions involves moving balance points, and the tough decisions—the ones that separate what is from and what ought to be—are rarely reached by the simplest solution or sound bite. Fortunately, like many scenarios, the way forward can be mined from the problem.
