Visitors will be charged €3–€10 depending on how busy the city is that day, with the measure coming into effect on 16 January next year

ByAround 20 million visitors descended on Venice in 2019, a high number for any tourist hub, but increasingly unsustainable for a sinking city of islands that is home to just 55,000 people. Day trippers pushed the Unesco World Heritage Centre to its limit with a peak of 120,000.will become the first city in the world with a booking system through which visitors will pay up to €10 to enter.

The full levy will therefore be charged during the city’s periods, which include the summer holidays, regattas and festivals and during Easter.St Mark’s Square is typically packed with tourists – it is hoped the varying charges will encourage holidaymakers to plan a visit outside of peak periods Venice, alongside several other busy tourist destinations, already has a tourist tax of sorts through charges added to short-term accommodation costs.

Overnight guests already pay a tourist tax when staying in Venice, with the charge levied through their accommodation bill, so will avoid the day tripper tax.
