The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers are both on pace to win more than 100 games. One of them will be stuck in the wild-card game, raising a question: Are the baseball playoffs fair?
The two best teams in baseball are the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. That’s been clear all summer, and it’s even more obvious now when there are two weeks left in the season and they’re both on pace to win about 104 games. It would be the first time two clubs in the same league finished with that many victories since 1942.
Yet when October rolls around, either the Giants or Dodgers will be forced to play in the do-or-die wild-card game against a far inferior opponent. After dominating the competition for six months, the fate of one of these squads will come down to nine innings—all because of geography and the quirks of MLB’s postseason structure.
