Photographer Juergen Teller varies between days of exercise and days of drinking and cigarettes. 'It's not so easy for me to keep a straight line,' he says.
Sometimes it takes only a word to inspire Juergen Teller, the photographer known for his high-art and fashion images that are equal parts gritty and humorous. Take the word. Early in his relationship with his now-wife and creative partner, Dovile Drizyte, the two were on the phone while she was away in Paris, and she mentioned she was going to eat snails. “I was like, snails? I don’t like snails,” says Teller, 57. “Then I thought, She is so pretty. She is like a peach.
Teller grew up in the German village of Bubenreuth, just outside a forest, which he says informed his artistic eye. After studying photography in the 1980s, he moved to London to pursue work despite not speaking English at the time. His career took off in the ’90s, thanks to portraits of subjects like musician Kurt Cobain and models Kristen McMenamy and Kate Moss.
