'It doesn’t matter the situation. I do my work and I do it with a smile. This is what I do, this is what I love.” The Jays' Santiago Espinal does it for the love of the game, and hopefully a starting job at second base, lauraarmy writes.

The 27-year-old was a breakout performer last year, proving capable of getting on base for a team that generally leans toward power. Espinal hit .311 with a .376 on-base percentage in 92 games last season while providing gold-glove calibre defence at third base.

Espinal won’t be plying his trade at third base much this season — the Jays traded for Matt Chapman last month — but he won’t be going far. He is now battling with Cavan Biggio for playing time at second base, while capable of backing up Chapman at third or Bo Bichette at shortstop. His role on the Jays’ opening day 28-man roster may not be as defined as some but it’s a far cry from last year, when he didn’t know if he had a role at all.

“I’m always doing defensive work with Bo. I’m always doing work with . That’s one of the most important parts for me now, to focus on defence,” he said.
