Greg Bird has been released by the Blue Jays after exercising an option in his contract, bnicholsonsmith reports.

Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith was first tothat Bird had been released, adding that Bird had a release clause in his contract and he opted to use it.

Bird, 29, was widely used in spring training and was in contention for a spot as a power-left-handed bat off the bench. The Blue Jays would have needed to sign Bird to a major league contract and add him to the 40-man roster to make him eligible to play MLB games with the team. Bird hit .261/.393/.565 with two home runs and six RBIs in 11 spring games, splitting time between first base and DH. He spent parts of four seasons with the Yankees and last played in the majors in 2019.
