She was the first Black woman to vote in Dallas, and served two terms on the City Council. She died in 1985 at age 83. Latoya Porter, a South Dallas resident, attended the Friday opening of the exhibit with her sister, nephew and nieces. She said she appreciates Johnson’s work because of the way it captures the neighborhood’s transformation. A photo that stood out to her was one that showed a bungalow-style home, which is common in South Dallas, next to a new, modern house.

“It’s instilling a sense of pride to see the places that they travel past everyday and to see them displayed in such a beautiful way,” Porter said. “They are the history of this area,” Johnson said. “If anything changes, more people just need help so that they can love their community; it’s their home.”

John Spriggins, the manager of the South Dallas Cultural Center, started the residency program as part of the, which was severely damaged from a broken sprinkler pipe in 2018. Johnson’s exhibit is the first project to come to fruition from the residency program.
