For all our problems – and they are many – we are still a haven of stability, tolerance and moderation in a world that is short of all three at the moment

Amid all this gloom, it is easy to forget how lucky we are. Lucky to inhabit a country of such natural wealth and splendour. Lucky to have enjoyed secure borders and domestic peace, avoiding the invasions, revolutions and civil wars that have plagued so many countries. Lucky to have been the landing place for so many newcomers from around the globe, whose presence has enriched us beyond measure.
In 1812, it nearly happened. Thomas Jefferson, sounding distinctly Trumpian, declared that taking Canada would be “a mere matter of marching.” But our side repelled the American invasion and set fire to the White House in the bargain. Sir John A. Macdonald pushed through the Canadian Pacific Railway to unite the emerging nation and prevent the vastness of the West from falling into Yankee hands. Canada was born.
Superior? No. Only the worst kind of bore dismisses our great southern neighbours as flag-waving yahoos and proclaims that “the world needs more Canada.” But you don’t have to be anti-American to see that there are advantages to being Canadian.
