Incoming U.S. president Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Canadian imports, and his apparent jokes about annexation have thrown the bulk of this country's voters offside, but so far have done little to change attitudes about Canada’s domestic politics, according to a series of recent opinion polls.
That was not necessarily good news for the incumbent Liberals. Negative impressions of Trudeau were at 61 per cent in the Dec. 8 survey, and positive impressions were 23 per cent. Poilievre had left a positive view among 41 per cent of respondents, and a negative impression among 36 per cent. Of those respondents with a positive view of Poilievre, a plurality—48 per cent—had a good impression of Trump, while 33 per cent had a negative view, and 17 per cent were neutral.
