The agreement, which must be approved Air Canada pilots in votes over the next month, averted a possible strike or lockout at Air Canada

Air Canada ’s pilots will receive cumulative raises of almost 42 per cent in a four-year tentative agreement announced early on Sunday morning.

The pilots will also receive 84 hours’ pay if the deal is ratified, a bonus that would bring $85,000 for the most senior pilots and $20,000 for those at the bottom of the seniority list. Charlene Hudy, a pilot who heads the Air Canada union, said in a statement that weeks of “intense round-the-clock negotiations” yielded a deal with improved pay, retirement and work rules.

If approved, the deal will cap a tense time between the airline and the pilots union. News of the tentative agreement will also bring relief to Air Canada’s customers, who had been braced for a possible shutdown that would upend travel plans.
