The tension in the air was thick, and the asphalt road and a steady stream of cars moving along it was the only thing separating the hundreds of people that surrounded the Aztec Theatre downtown. The opposing groups, standing on either side of St. Mary’s Street, hurled insults at one another as their words were garbled amid the downtown noise.
On the other side of St. Mary’s Street, next to the front doors of the Aztec, was a rainbow-colored crowd that vastly outnumbered the far-right group. Hundreds of LGBTQ+ people and allies came out to counter protest against This is Texas Freedom Force and show support for the drag community. He said his group told the Aztec that it would cancel its protest if the theater restricted attendance to the show to people 18 and older.
This Is Texas Freedom Force, which is labeled as an extremist militia group by the FBI, says it is not anti-government and supports law enforcement as long as “they are upholding their oath.” It organized the armed “Hold the Line” rallies in 2020, surrounding the Alamo, during the protests following the killing of George Floyd.
The Queen Fantasia stood in the middle of the crowd as speakers played iconic pop songs such as “Hollaback Girl” and the counter protestors danced to the music. Through the thumping tunes, protestors chanted phrases like “Two, four, six, eight. Stop the violence. Stop the hate.”

Letter: Everybody at Hale Center Theatre should be named Ebenezer ScroogeI attended the matinee performance of “A Christmas Carol” recently at Hale Center Theatre and I had an enjoyable afternoon, but the two-hour entertainment left me $49 behind, which is a good hunk of my limited income which could have gone far for other resources. I am watching a show about a stingy curmudgeon at the same time realizing my money might have gone to the poor and destitute as well rather than an overpriced play to pay for an ornate theater with high overhead.
