A 17-year-old gunman opened fire at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, killing a female student and then taking his own life. Two others were injured in the shooting. School resource officers were on scene but not near the cafeteria where the shooting occurred.
A 17-year-old shooter tragically took his own life after fatally shooting a female student at Antioch High School in Nashville , Tennessee, on Wednesday. Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) spokesperson Don Aaron revealed during a press conference that two other individuals sustained injuries during the incident and are currently receiving treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Aaron stated that two school resource officers were present within the school building at the time of the shooting. However, they were not positioned in close proximity to the cafeteria where the gunfire erupted. By the time they arrived at the scene, the shooting had ceased, and the perpetrator had fatally wounded himself. Antioch High School, with an approximate enrollment of 2,000 students, is situated in a neighborhood roughly 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville. School officials urged parents to refrain from going directly to the high school to collect their children but instead instructed them to proceed to the nearby hospital. Students were being transported to the hospital via bus as they were released from the school under police supervision. The FBI in Nashville deferred inquiries to the Metro Nashville Police Department, which is spearheading the investigation. FBI spokesperson Elizabeth Clement-Webb confirmed in an email that Nashville police had not requested the FBI's assistance in the investigation as of early Wednesday afternoon. This tragic event comes amidst heightened awareness of school shootings in Nashville. In March 2023, a gunman perpetrated a horrific shooting at The Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in the city, resulting in the deaths of three 9-year-old children and three adults.
