A 17-year-old gunman took his own life after fatally shooting a female student at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee , on Wednesday, according to police. Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron revealed during a press conference that two other individuals sustained injuries in the shooting and were receiving treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Aaron stated that two school resource officers were present within the school building at the time of the incident. However, they were not in the immediate vicinity of the cafeteria where the shooting occurred. By the time they arrived at the scene, the shooting had ceased, and the shooter had self-inflicted a fatal gunshot wound. The school, which enrolls approximately 2,000 students, is situated in a neighborhood located about 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville. School officials instructed parents not to proceed to the high school to collect their children but instead to rendezvous at a nearby hospital. Students were transported to the designated hospital via bus as they were released from the school under police escort. The FBI in Nashville deferred inquiries to the Metro Nashville Police Department, which is spearheading the investigation. FBI spokesperson Elizabeth Clement-Webb confirmed in an email that Nashville police had not requested the FBI's assistance in the investigation as of early Wednesday afternoon. This tragic incident follows a string of school shootings that have deeply shaken Nashville. Notably, in March 2023, a shooter perpetrated a horrific act at The Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in the city, resulting in the deaths of three 9-year-old children and three adults.
