The event will take place at Beacon United Church on Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m.“We are so pleased that Hear! Here! Society has been asked to host the symphony as part of its eight-stop, 40th anniversary provincial tour. This will be the first provincial tour by the symphony in 15 years and we will get to hear it here,” said Hear! Here!’s co-chair Virginia Stoddard.
The program selected for this provincial tour revolves around Franz Joseph Haydn’s expressive and spirited Cello Concerto in C Major, gifted by Haydn to a good friend, and lost to the musical world until discovered in a museum in Czechoslovakia in 1961. It will be richly interpreted by internationally acclaimed cellist Denise Djokic.
The concert begins with Dinuk Wijeratne’s Yatra, a work commissioned by Symphony Nova Scotia to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. The program also includes a new composition, especially for the 40th from Symphony Nova Scotia bassoonist Christopher Palmer. The concert concludes with a performance of Symphony no. 3 in g minor. It is the crowning achievement of Louise Farrenc, one of France’s greatest 19th-century composers.
Hear! Here! Society will be hosting a post-concert reception in the auditorium of Beacon United Church for ticket holders and symphony members. This concert is made possible due to generous contributions, both from private supporters and grants from Arts Nova Scotia, and all three municipal councils in Yarmouth County.
