Alisha Barron, owner of Fired Creations — The Pottery Painting Café and chair of the Sydney Santa Claus Parade committee: "We’ve been very open and willing to have conversations with the right people." CONTRIBUTED/COREY KATZ PHOTOGRAPHYSYDNEY — The chair of a forthcoming Sydney Santa Claus parade committee says she is looking to rebrand the Dec. 11 event after receiving backlash over the parade route not running through Whitney Pier.

As previously reported, Barron said the group reached out to CBRM’s Recreation Department just recently to help put a moving Santa Claus parade together since the department could potentially be facing an imminent inside workers’ strike. She added the department did what they could to support the group — who, in Barron’s words, are"just trying to do something for the greater good of the community.

“ night on Facebook, I had one of the people who threatened us had messaged me and apologized for doing so,” she said with a laugh. “And I did have a different councillor reach out to me wanting to have a conversation: Glenn Paruch.” Green, whose district includes Whitney Pier, said the intent of Sunday’s residents' meeting was mainly to point out he was the only councillor told by Mayor Amanda McDougall that a parade would be taking place, but wouldn’t be including the Pier.

Whitney Pier Group Society president Alan Nathanson encouraged the 50 or so who attended Sunday’s meeting to let the mayor know that the old Santa Claus parade route needs to be reinstated — via messages, texts and phone calls.
