However, many leaders and employees have never learned to have critical conversations to deliver bad news, confront performance issues or address a conflict.

People learn pain quickly, and when we anchor something like burning our hand on a stove as unfavourable, we store this as pain at unconscious and conscious levels — and something to avoid at all costs. To help workers thrive, leaders should understand and learn how the following three elements are independent and interdependent. The more leaders can develop knowledge and skills in these elements, the more likely they will be able to cope with adversity in a way they can grow rather than feel drained. People experience strain when maturing and evolving emotionally, no different than training for a 10-kilometre run.
