Boxers left without place to train

, which caused damage across Cape Breton and left thousands without power. At the time, club members understood there were more important things to worry about but wanted to get ahead of things.

“They said they’d contact me once power was restored and we’d be put at the top of the priority list and see what they could do,” said Ley. To make matters worse, the building itself remains without a roof and no tarps were ever put over the top to keep the weather out, which has led the boxing club to wonder if they’ll ever get back inside the facility.

“We let kids come in here if they can’t afford it and we pay gear for them, there’s nothing they need. For the kids who come here, this club means a lot to them.”“It has really helped with my anxiety and stuff,” said Selvet. “I loved coming here and it was a place where I was able to get things off my mind – it was one big family here and I really miss it.”

“We’ve repaired the roof and did building renovations inside and we never charged the municipality a dime for it, we did that on our own bank account,” he said. “We’re still waiting for a response back from them and what the go-forward will be on those particular properties,” he said. “The properties are unfortunately all in one envelope, if I can use that term, and unfortunately we haven’t at this point been able to separate the boxing club building out of that.”

“If I’m being honest with you, we anticipated that we probably would have had that information back probably six weeks ago, but unfortunately they’re still doing the other buildings,” said MacDonald.
