The money from the Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund is meant to help shellfish workers and non-profit organizations with damage repairs, equipment replacement, cleanup, product loss and long-term projects for adaptations against extreme weather.
Ginette Petitpas Taylor, centre, Ottawa’s Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced $40 million of federal support for Atlantic Canadian aquaculture enterprises affected by last fall’s post-tropical storm Fiona. Petitpas Taylor was accompanied in the announcement by P.E.I. Members of Parliament Heath MacDonald, Sean Casey and Lawrence MacAulay. - Stu NeatbySPRINGBROOK, P.E.I.
"Farm shellfish producers and farmers lost products, lost crops, seeds, gear and infrastructure. This is significant because the shellfish sector in many coastal and rural and small Atlantic Canadian communities is a major employer for nearly 2,200 people," Petitpas Taylor told reporters on Jan. 20.The $40-million fund is part of the federal government’s $300-million Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund, announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this past fall.
The P.E.I. Aquaculture Alliance has estimated damages from the storm in the province added up to $72 million. “It's going to really help the larger players in the industry recover from the damages that they have suffered," Warris told SaltWire Network. Given the increasing threat of future ferocious storms, Warris believes governments should allow the sector to access risk management programs available to the farming sector, such as AgriStability.
