The move comes one month after Philadelphia became the first city to ban cashless establishments.

WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 18: Custom salad being made at Sweetgreen in Washington, DC on September 18, 2017. By Abha Bhattarai Abha Bhattarai Reporter covering the retail industry Email Bio Follow April 26 at 2:48 PM Two years after going “cashless,” salad chain Sweetgreen will begin accepting cold, hard cash at its stores again.

"Going cashless had positive results, but it also had the unintended consequence of excluding those who prefer to pay or can only pay with cash,” the company said in a blog post this week. “Everyone in the community needs to have access to real food.”Sweetgreen said that when it first decided to go cashless in 2016, it thought the move would reduce the number of robberies in restaurants and cut down on the use of armored cars and paper.

A growing number of retailers, including Amazon, are rethinking their policies. The Seattle-based tech giant recently confirmed that it plans to soon accept cash at its Amazon Go convenience stores. The cashier-less stores currently require shoppers to pay using an app on their smartphones.
